Last night, the Evergreen Chiropractic office was virtually transformed into an art gallery, with artwork by six different artists hanging on the walls and lining the hallways.

It made for the perfect setting to listen to Carl Sloan read from his new book, Random Thoughts of a Wandering Mind: Musings from a Lifetime of Being Half-Smart.

Along with answering questions about his literary work, Carl talked about the photographic digital art that he and his wife, Lida, create. For them, art is about balancing “playfulness”–which helps to foster creativity–with polish, which artists sometimes forget about. Carl and Lida make it a point to put in as much time on the latter.

A recent HealthDay News article (“Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation Won’t Cause Chest Injuries, Study Contends”, Friday, May 13) summarized the results of a study published in the May 13 online edition of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.

Researchers used a “crash test” dummy and an instrumented mechanical device to apply and measure the force of chest compression used during typical chiropractic manipulation. Results showed that even when chiropractors applied maximum effort in their compression, there was little to no risk of chest injury.

“Results from this preliminary study showed that maximum chest compression during chiropractic manipulation of the thoracic spine is unlikely to result in injury,” lead investigator Brian D. Stemper, associate professor in the department of neurosurgery at Medical College of Wisconsin, said in a journal news release.

This study provides further confirmation of the safety of chiropractic care when performed by an expert and customized for the individual patient.

The artist’s work focuses on industrial landscapes, sometimes incorporating raw materials like abandoned urban hardware to add a three dimensional feel to his art.

After living in the Bay Area for most of his life, Hewitt moved to Tokyo for a few years for a change of scenery. He has been friends with Dr Russell and Elizabeth Kun for about 10 years.
